Drink Oolong Tea to Burn Fat
Camellia sinensis is the name of the plant all teas come from.  Herb teas come from a variety of other plants. The tea plant produces compounds known as polyphenols that include flavonoids, the beneficial antioxidants. The difference between green tea and oolong tea is in the processing. When picked, all tea is green. When heated, the natural enzymatic process (oxidation) is halted in the leaves of the tea so it will stay green. Once dried, green tea leaves are rolled to break up cells. Oolong tea leaves are plucked, and allowed to oxidize under controlled conditions, thus the leaves become dark. The leaves of the oolong tea are not intentionally broken, leaving most of the cell structure intact.
In order to lower one’s weight, two things are important: a.) increasing energy expenditure (EE) usually by exercising and b.) inhibiting the absorption of calorie rich nutrients such as fats.
An American study conducted at the US Agriculture Research Services’ Diet and Human Laboratory in 2001 under the supervision of Dr. William Rumpler, physiologist, used 12 male volunteers and used four different preparations that the participants were given in four consecutive days. It was certainly not a long term study but researcher found some interesting results. The beverage formulas were as follows: 1.) full strength oolong tea, 2.) water containing caffeine equal what was in the full strength oolong tea. 3.) half strength oolong tea and 4.) water not containing caffeine.
Energy Expenditure (EE) levels were measured every day for three days. The following results were found:1,) EE expenditure was about 3% higher when participants drank either full strength oolong tea or the caffeinated water.2,) When full strength oolong tea was drunk, 67 more calories were consumed per day.3.) On full strength oolong tea consumption participants increased fat oxidation by 12 %.SHN                                         February 2008

4.) Data confirmed that a component other than caffeine was responsible for fat burning.Dr. Rumpler and his coworkers concluded that drinking oolong tea can tell the body to burn fat for energy. They thought that caffeine together with EGCG (epigallolcatechinegallate) an antioxidant, were the two agents of importance. There was a third compound however. In a Japanese study in 2003 eleven healthy young female students participated. They received oolong tea, powdered green tea leaves and water. Both teas were prepared with boiling water. The powdered tea leaves were dissolved while the oolong leaves were steeped for five minutes. EE levels were measured 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes after consuming the beverage. They peaked at 90 minutes for both oolong and green tea and lasted at that level for 120 minutes. The results however showed that consuming oolong tea the participants expended more energy than drinking green tea or water and the energy high lasted up to two hours. The Japanese scientists also measured the concentrations of caffeine, individual catechins and other polyphenols in the teas. They found that the concentration of caffeine and EGCG was much higher in green tea versus oolong tea. The concentration of polymerized polyphenols was much higher in oolong tea versus the green tea. These measurements showed that while both caffeine and EGCG help in burning calories, the concentration of polymerized polyphenols in oolong tea is the key to burning more fat and helping weight reduction. A good Taiwanese oolong tea is called the Imperial Formosa Oolong. The first Europeans who visited Taiwan were Portuguese sailors. They marveled at the beauty of the island and they called it 〝Isla Formosa〞 or 〝Beautiful Island〞.  Most of the tea produced in Taiwan is for local consumption. The Taiwanese are connoisseurs of tea and there are Tea Competitions at regular intervals and the winners can receive rather high prices for their crop.High altitude tea plantations produce the best quality teas. They are hand picked and hand processed. 〝Producing Taiwan oolong tea is an exacting and time consuming process. The quality of the final product depends as much on the finishing as on the raw tea leaves.〞 These are artisan teas, which have been produced by care and are deserving the name 〝Imperial Formosa Oolong.〞-- according to the producers of the tea. Tea leaves are the heart and soul of Formosa oolong tea. Taiwanese tea farmers are increasingly adopting organic growing practices that produce higher quality tea leaves.

vol. 13  no. 2  p. 3There are a number of health benefits of consuming oolong tea:Allergies: two catechin derivatives (C-1 and C-2) isolated from oolong tea have shown potent antiallergic activity.Eczema: Japanese researchers showed that drinking about a liter of oolong tea a day patients with this affliction improved.Bacterial infections: it was shown that in laboratory cultures oolong tea polyphenols strongly inhibited the enzyme activities of some type of streptococci.Cancer: oolong tea extracts have shown potential chemoprotective action against carcinoma of the liver.Cavities: oolong tea polyphenols could be useful for controlling dental caries.Diabetes: oolong tea consumption may be an effective adjunct to oral hypoglycemics in the management of type 2 diabetes.Obesity: It was shown that consumption of oolong tea stimulated energy expenditure (EE) and fat oxidation in normal weight men.For references please go to the web site: <http://www.teafromtaiwan.com/Health.htm>〝Health Benefits of Oolong Tea〞 and 〝Taiwan Oolong Tea〞
Oolong tea is available at any healthfood store. The organically grown tea in Taiwan, called Green Hearted Oolong tea is described by Hsu chien-chen, CEO of May Zest Tea Co. Ltd. as an outstanding product that gives off fragrances of flowers or flavors of fruits. Mr. Hsu chien-chen grows the tea on his land in Taiwan.  Allergy Research Group imports their tea products. See page 5 for address and phone.Drink GABA Tea to Lower your Blood Pressure GABA stands for gamma-amino-butyric-acid, a neurotransmitter. It is an inhibitory agent. In the body excitation of the brain is balanced with inhibition. GABA is made from glutamic acid and its derivatives, glutamates with the aid of vitamin B6. Too much excitation will lead to sleeplessness, nervousness, anxiety and increased stress. GABA sends messages to the CNS (brain, and spinal cord), which in turn directs the heart, lungs and kidneys to slow down.GABA is an anti-stress, anti-anxiety, calming and relaxing nutrient. Clinically it has been recommended to take for depressed sex-drive, prostate problems and it is used as a non-addictive, natural, nonprescription tranquilizer. GABA tea is a natural source of GABA. It was discovered in Japan, more than 20 years ago, while they were looking for a natural method to preserve food. During this research they discovered that tea, which is fermented in a nitrogen-rich atmosphere exhibited a higher concentration of GABA than oolong teas made other ways.

vol. 13  no. 2  p. 4Tea leaves of the plant Camellia sinensis, are treated differently. Oxidation refers to exposing the tea leaves to air after they have been picked. Black tea is 100% oxidized, green tea is not oxidized, while oolong tea is partially oxidized. GABA tea production involves placing the fresh leaves in stainless steel tanks, air is suctioned out and nitrogen introduced. Fermenting the tea leaves under nitrogen gas lasts several hours (6 to 10 hours). The tea leaves are also heated and maintained over 40 degrees Celsius (104 F) and at a pH level of 5.8. The nitrogen rich atmosphere enhances the production of GABA that is found naturally in tea leaves. GABA content of tea relaxes the smooth muscles of the arteries and veins, therefore the inside lumen of these vessels increases allowing more blood to flow through without placing extra stress on the vessel walls. GABA tea may be good for ED (erectile dysfunction). Drinking GABA tea on a regular basis will help to keep the blood pressure in the normal ranges, in addition it tastes great, say the drinkers of this beverage.   When GABA tea is brewed it has a dark brown color with a pleasant light taste. It may be consumed hot or iced. The Japanese did research work with salt sensitive rats. They fed them with sodium chloride (NaCl) rich diet for three weeks, Thereafter the rats were given water (W group), regular tea (T group) and GABA tea (G group) to drink. The test lasted four weeks. The GABA tea consumption was 4.0 mg per rat per day. After four weeks the blood pressure of the rats was checked. The G group experienced significant pressure drop.Source: 〝Effects of tea rich in gamma-amino-butiric acid on blood pressure of Dahli salt-sensitive rats〞by Yasuhiko Abe et al. It stimulates the pituitary gland to secrete HGH (human growth hormone). Studies have shown that high levels of circulating HGH will promote lean tissue formation and reduce body fat. Rather than injecting HGH into the muscle, as many older persons do, GABA content of the oolong tea will naturally increase the body’s circulating HGH level. Studies have shown that 90 minutes after taking GABA in tea or in other forms, HGH levels in the blood will increase five times the previous plasma concentrations. As humans grow older they produce less growth hormone and have increasing difficulty to burn fat and to lose body weight. Drinking GABA tea will naturally increase the level of growth hormone circulating in the blood stream. Thus if you drink this beverage several times a day, your HGH levels in the blood will increase and you’ll feel younger, stronger and leaner.GABA tea consumption will increase mental alertness. Japanese parents give GABA tea to their school age children to increase their power of concentration, giving the kids a competitive advantage in school. Information in the brain is transferred from one neuron (nerve cell) to

vol. 13  no. 2  p. 5another by the help of neurotransmitters in the synapses. The connection between two neurons is called the synapse. There are more than 100 types of neurotransmitters helping the information to flow in the brain. GABA is an important neurotransmitter because it contributes to the efficient functioning of all other neurotransmitters. GABA in the blood stream easily crosses the blood-brain barrier and can work with the neurons of the brain efficiently. GABA relieves stress and lowers anxiety and imparts mental alertness. In general, anti-anxiety Rx medications will increase the weight of the patient, which is rather unfortunate. GABA tea on the other hand, not only naturally reduces tension but it is also helpful to lose weight.Have a hangover? - drink GABA tea. Consuming GABA tea will lessen the withdrawal symptoms of alcohol and helps to shorten the discomfort of hangovers. For the casual drinker, GABA tea consumption is useful to decrease the symptoms of alcohol intoxication. Drinkers of alcoholic beverages reported that they can consume more alcohol if they drink a cup or two GABA tea beforehand. .Source: 〝GABA Tea, Health Benefits〞<http://www.allgabatea.com/>Oolong tea is available at any healthfood store but I have not seen GABA tea there or in Japanese supermarkets. You probably have to order it from Taiwan. This island has good trade winds and high mountains and the optimum climate to grow the tea. There is a small company (five employees) called May Zest Tea Co. Ltd. founded by Mr. Hsu chien-chen, a professional tea trader. Their products are certified organic. Herbal medicine healers and naturopathic physicians have included this herb in their repertoire of treating various viral diseases, such as the Flu, Hepatitis C, HIV, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Herpes Virus infections, Bronchitis and Pneumonia. The 1918 flu epidemic killed many millions of people. Ernst Krebb, M.D. of Carson City, Nevada, was surprised to learn that Washoe tribe members did not get sick or recovered very fast

vol. 13  no. 2  p. 6if they came down with the disease. Not one death was reported in the Washoe community. Upon inquiring, he was told that locals took 〝Toh-sa〞or 〝Do-sa〞 preparations. In the Bulletin of the Nevada State Board of Halth, No. 1, Carson City, Nevada, January 1920 an article was published 〝An Indian Remedy For Influenza.〞In this article it was stated that during the Fall of 1918 when the influenza epidemic visited that section of Nevada, the Washoe Indians used a root in the treatment of their sick, which was gathered along the foothills of the slope of the Sierra. The plant proved to be a rare species of the parsley family. The Indians gathered this root in the late part of the Fall, usually in November. The root is cut up and a decoction is made by boiling the root in water, skimming off the top and giving large doses of the broth. A pound of root was considered the proper dose to treat a case of fever for three days, which was the longest time needed to break up a fever due to influenza or a pulmonary disease. There was not a single death in the Washoe tribe from influenza or its complications. Indians living in the other parts of the State of Nevada, where the plant did not grow, died in numbers.Source: History of Lomatium dissectum <http://www.lomatium.com/history.htm>You can order the extract from Mnt.Oaks, LLC. She was delighted to experience that the majority of people using it regularly exhibited improvement and considerable decrease of virus count as determined by PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test. Based on this good experience she began to recommend the extract for respiratory infections as well.   <http://www.lomatium.com/testimonials.htm>The popular name of Lomatium dissectum is Fernleaf biscuit root. Native American tribes have used preparations from this plant for many conditions. The root was burnt and the smoke was inhaled to treat asthma and other chest complaints. The peeled and crushed root was made to be a poultice and was applied to open cuts, bruises, sores, boils and rheumatic complained. The root was soaked in water, which then was used as a wash for the hair to get rid of dandruff. Some people are sensitive to lomatium and develop a skin rash after taking it. One person (P. Osman) described the reaction: 〝I was on lomatium for one week when I broke out in terrible hives. I had huge red welts that covered every area of my body. They were even on my face, lips and in my eyes. I was starting to feel better when I was taking it before I broke out. It’s a shame that I had such strong reaction.〞  When Lomatium is taken with Dandelion the rash is less.Source: Plants For a Future. Lomatium dissectum - (Nutt.) vol. 13  no. 2  p. 7When an allergic reaction happens, of course, you should seek medical help. When you are in the medical office ask your doctor if he or she is willing to apply the 〝World War 1 Method〞 to eliminate your allergies to this substance. Draw about two ml or blood from your vein and inject it directly into your hip quickly to make sure the blood did not clot in the syringe. You could have a 〝blood shot〞 three times in the first week, then twice a week the second week then once a week thereafter. This autohemotherapy works well for inhalent and food allergies. Considering the lomatium extract and other of its preparations as food, these series of injections may just do the trick for you. Please refer to the March 2007 issue of SHN to obtain more details on auto- hemo-therapy.Forbidden Rice - An Aphrodisiac? This nutrient rich rice has an outer coating of black bran. Due to its high nutritional value the emperors of ancient China ate it and forbid the commoners to have it. Bran is rich in dietary fiber and in B-complex vitamins. Black rice also provides amino acids and phytochemicals with anti-oxidant properties. Forbidden rice is rich in iron and considered a remedy for anemia by the Chinese. It has a delicious nutty flavor, soft texture and beautiful rich, dark purple color when cooked. Unlike other black rice varieties from Asia, the forbidden rice is not glutinous, is not rough and cooks in only 30 minutes according to Lotus Foods, that sells the organically grown variety. Phone:1-866-972-8879, Web site: <http://www.worldpantry.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prmenbr=127574&prrfnbr=146780>Forbidden rice is a short grained, heirloom rice that is black when raw and becomes deep purple when cooked. Recently this type of rice, grown organically, became popular in the West especially for the desire to avoid genetically modified food. The evil scientists at Monsanto are doing much harm to planet earth and its people by growing GMO (genetically modified organisms) and call it food. Their 〝Roundup〞 herbicide has been implicated in causing lymphoma in humans. In order to sell more of this poison, Monsanto developed genetically engineered crops that are resistant to this poison so it can be sprayed indiscriminately on the crop. Do not buy 〝Roundup ready〞 plant items.Forbidden rice, also called Emperor rice comes originally from China but today it is grown in many parts of the world. In Italy it is produced in particular areas of the Valley of the Po river, according to Riso Gallo S.p.A., an Italian rice trading company, that has been in business for over 150 years. They produce the Risotto brand of rice. Most historical references say that this rice was reserved for the emperor table. It was also considered as an aphrodisiac and was probably shared by the emperor’s consorts and members of his family. Because of its aphrodisiac quality it was called the forbidden rice so that only the emperor could eat it.

Forbidden Rice (China Black)<http://www.thedailyplate.com/nutrition-calories/food/lotus-foods/forbidden-rice-china-black>The bran layer of whole grain rice contains health-beneficial compounds. The color of the outside layer could vary from brown to red and black and purple and that is where you find the valuable nutrients. In the refining process the bran layer is removed and only the starchy white rice grain is left that is not nutritious at all. Don’t eat white rice and educate your Oriental and Latino restaurant owners to switch to whole grain rice.In the bran layer one finds vitamin E compounds such as tocopherols and tocotrienols, oryzanol fractions (the best known is gamma-oryzanol), simple phenolic compounds and poly-phenolics. These are antioxidants and they provide protection against cardiovascular diseases and cancers. Human studies in alimentation have shown that the tocotrienol rice fraction and oryzanol fractions of rice bran reduced serum cholesterol levels particularly of the LDL (bad cholesterol)..Source: rice Bran Phytonutrients by Chen, M.-H., Bergman, Ch. and Pinson, Sh, July 12, 2007; <http://www.ars.usda.gov/research/publications/Publications.htm?seq_no_115=214  427>.Another research project also studied phytonutrients in rice bran to learn about its disease prevention and health related benefits.
